Big celebrations for President-elect Joe Biden’s victory over Donald Trump in major US cities. Supporters of the Democratic candidate took to the streets after CNN and other major news outlets screened the Democratic candidate as the winner having captured Pennsylvania and the 270 electoral votes needed to be elected.
In Washington, a crowd thronged the streets in front of the White House at Black Lives Matter Plaza, seconds after the announcement. The crowds in the blocks around the White House created a traffic jam, with people sitting on top of cars and drivers throwing their fists out the window. A person wearing an American flag as a cloak headed to Black Lives Matter Plaza with a handwritten sign saying “The nightmare is over.”
In Philadelphia, which was the key to Biden’s Pennsylvania victory, a large crowd gathered outside City Hall, bringing with them everything from coffees to brunch cocktails. “The city belongs to Biden!” yelled a woman from a car headed down Broad Street in the city center.
The crowd then began marching towards Independence Hall, where the American Declaration of Independence and Constitution were signed. “We are really excited about this new transition in the country,” Beth Lapiene, a law student at Temple University, told CNN.
In New York, a crowd gathered outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower, chanting: “No more Trump!”. In Times Square, a man played “Hail to the Chief” on the trombone, while in Brooklyn people danced in cars. In Chicago, a growing crowd gathered to celebrate outside Trump Tower.
Outside Biden’s campaign headquarters in Wilmington, Delaware, people of all ages cheered, sang, and honked, and the crowd gathered to sing “God Bless America.”
