The Empty City of Tianducheng: China’s Failed Replica of Paris

JakartaChina known as a country that can make a lot of counterfeit goods. Apart from electronics and clothing, there are also replicas of iconic buildings and towers in China. In short, China is known as a country that is adept at making KW goods.

Tianducheng, in China is a replica of Paris. Yes, this city is also complete with the Eiffel Tower, just like the one in Paris.

But unfortunately, this city is now empty and has become one of the dead cities in China.

Tall buildings that clawed at the sky are scattered in the city area. Likewise with the apartments that are lined up towering. Everything is deserted and uninhabited.

Quoted from Nomadasaurus, Sunday (13/8/2023), the empty streets of a new age ghost town in China have attracted international curiosity for years. Rapid construction of new towns is being completed at a phenomenal pace, with the hope that the future will see a sudden influx of local residents filling their vacant rooms.

The Chinese government is preparing for a housing shortage that is expected to soon impact the overpopulated communist nation. Each rail journey along the east side of the country will unlock hundreds of these unoccupied settlements.

Tianducheng is a few hours’ drive from Shanghai. However, it has conditions that really contrast with that busy city.

Tianducheng was a spectacular urban development failure. Apartment buildings tower around the Eiffel Tower. Most of the buildings remained empty.

Developers started construction in Tianducheng in 2007, complete with a 1:3 scale replica of the Eiffel Tower and a fountain recreation of Luxemburg Gardens.

The initial plan had an expected capacity of 10,000 residents. Currently the city’s population is about 10% of that. The streets are empty, the store fronts have been boarded up, the iron railings are rusting and the famous fountain is bone dry.

China has been building sensational replicas of internationally famous monuments for years. In Shenzhen, one can walk between the Sphinx and the former World Trade Center at the ‘Window Of The World’ amusement park.

The largest man-made structure on the planet is in Chengdu, complete with a vast man-made beach and a fake sun. In Tianducheng, tourists can see ‘Paris’.
