The employed population in Mexico decreased during June: Inegi

Employment fell by more than 863,000 jobs in June, despite the fact that jobs were created in the industrial sector during the sixth month of 2024, the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reported on Friday.

Data from the National Survey of Occupation and Employment (ENOE) reveal that in June the economically active population (EAP) employed, both in the formal and informal sectors, amounted to just over 58 million 949 thousand people, a figure that was lower than in the fifth month of the year, when it stood at 59 million 813 thousand.

The lower dynamism observed in the sixth month was explained by the loss of more than 332 thousand jobs in agriculture, livestock, forestry, hunting and fishing, as well as another 152 thousand in construction, 283 thousand in restaurants and accommodation services, among other sectors.

Compared to June of last year, the employed EAP saw a decrease of just over 273 thousand jobs, which means that it stood at 58 million 949 thousand in the reference month. This figure translated into a decrease of 0.1 percent at an annual rate.

According to information published by Inegi, the number of employed men in the sixth month of the year rose to 34 million 945 thousand, a figure that showed an increase of more than 5 thousand jobs compared to last May.

Compared to the same month in 2023, the number of jobs for the male population increased by 211 thousand.

The number of employed women in June rose to 24 million 004 thousand, a figure that showed a loss of 869 thousand jobs compared to the fifth month of the year.

In the annual variation, the employed female population showed an increase of 61 thousand jobs.

The participation rate for men was 75.9 percent and for women, 45.7 percent.

In June, the underemployed population, that is, those willing to have another job, was 4.4 million people, which represented 190 thousand less than in the same period in 2023.

The underemployment rate was 7.5 percent of the employed population, lower than the 7.9 percent recorded in the sixth month of last year.

The number of people employed in the informal sector was 31 million 700 people. The informality rate stood at 54.8 percent in the reference period, which translated into a decrease of 1.1 percentage points compared to the same period in 2023.

The employed population by sector of activity was distributed between services with 25.8 million people, trade with 11.7 million, and manufacturing industry with 9.9 million.
