The Nile virus is carried by birds, but it is transmitted to humans only because of this insect.

This transmission system makes scientists fear a spread on the territory, like other viruses such as chikungunya or dengue fever. In most cases, West Nile virus is not very virulent in patients who contract it, since 80% of human infections are asymptomaticaccording to Public Health France.

For the remaining 20%, an influenza-like illness can appear, with fever, pains and headaches. In rare cases, the virus can manifest more aggressively, especially in the elderly, or people with weak immune systems, which can lead to neurological disorders.
