the emergencies of the Drôme Nord hospitals launch an indefinite strike

The summer promises to be tough for emergency rooms in Drôme Nord hospitals. The CGT is filing an unlimited strike notice from this Wednesday to warn of the situation in the Romans-sur-Isère establishment which is “understaffed following a tense situation for months“Patients could indeed flock in view of the partial closure of emergencies at night at Grenoble hospital or even the tense situation of that of Valence hospital.

The management ensures that the current staff can take care of patients. Which is far from reassuring caregivers. We are afraid, being in almost normal staff, to welcome more patients than we are able to do. We can’t push the walls“retorts an emergency nurse who prefers to remain anonymous.

The irony of this strike lies in its reason for existing. The sixty or so emergency workers cannot go on strike because it takes a minimum of caregivers to run the service. “And we’re so understaffed that agents are assigned and can’t stop working“, laments Thierry Giraud the general secretary of the CGT.

Two days earlier, the management of the hospital spoke with the CGT during a Health, Safety and Working Conditions Committee (CHSCT) and the union protested the inefficiency of this meeting: “Given the few responses we received to our questions […]we wonder if your presence was really useful.

The CGT and management back to back

The CGT requires at least the recruitment of three people : a nurse, a caregiver and a secretary. But the management believes that a few adjustments will allow the summer to pass without a hitch. “On the medical secretariats, we will have two additional people in July and two others in August. We are going to put in place a reinforcement of nursing assistants at night and we are also putting in place a reinforcement of a doctor over three weeks“, indicates Laurence Brûlé, the assistant director of the hospital.

The latter affirms that if the situation becomes complicated after the three weeks, the steering will have no trouble adapting. The CGT speaks of “rustine“and temporary solution to a problem”which persists“. Between the union and the hospital, the rag is burning and even in terms of figures. The CGT evokes a considerable increase in the number of emergency visits to Romans-sur-Isère: + 25% in 2022 compared to 2021. For its part, the management is quick to temper by saying that the increase is around 10% compared to a year excluding covid.
