The emergence of the Marburg virus is similar to Ebola, WHO warns this

Liputan6.com, Conakry – World Health Organization (WHO) Tuesday (10/8) said at least four people had contact with a man who died of the Marburg virus – a virus similar to Ebola – in Guinea, when a number of WHO staff were sent to the West African country to help authorities stop the outbreak.

Spokesman WHO Fadela Chaib said Monday’s case was the first in West Africa, a region that was hit by a terrible Ebola outbreak between 2014-2016 that killed at least 11,325 people.

Chaib said authorities were trying to trace the contacts of the four men who previously visited the health facility before the man died. VOA Indonesia, Thursday (12/8/2021).

“At least four people who have been in contact have not had any symptoms. They have not shown this disease,” he said.

Chaib said 10 staff WHO currently conducting contact tracing in Guinea.

The Marburg virus belongs to the same group of viruses as Ebola, which has previously affected parts of Africa, including Angola, Congo, Kenya, South Africa and Uganda.
