The electric Mercedes covered more than 1,000 km on a single charge. Across the Alps and in real traffic

Mercedes-Benz introduced the EQXX pre-production electric model earlier this year and immediately spoke of it as the most economical and environmentally friendly car in its history. The management then even claimed that the car was able to travel up to 1,000 kilometers on a single charge, in normal operation.

The carmaker has now confirmed its bold claims by sending a fully charged EQXX on a journey from Sindelfingen, Germany, to Cassis in the south of France. The car thus drove 1008 kilometers across the Swiss Alps on a single charge, in normal traffic and in the usual way. The car journey took 12 hours and 2 minutes and the car was in operation for 11 hours and 32 minutes. The driver therefore had an average speed of 87.4 km / h.

What’s amazing is that a car with a battery charged by another 15 percent and an estimated range of another 140 kilometers arrived in Cassis. Road temperatures ranged from 3 to 18 degrees Celsius and consumption dropped to 8.7 kWh / 100 km. The whole trip was then overseen by a commission from TÜV Süd, so the numbers can be relied upon.

The key to the economy of the electric Mercedes is the sophisticated aerodynamics of the body in the shape of a drop and low weight. The car’s battery has a capacity of almost 100 kWh, but the battery is smaller than any standard Mercedes. Even with the battery frame, it weighs only 495 kilograms and the whole car then weighs 1,750 kg.
