Unemployed for eight years
One of the people who have found work again is Sylvia Schouten (62). She has been unemployed for eight years and works in a door factory. “I ended up in a men’s culture,” she says in the NOS Radio 1 News† She is very happy with this job: “You learn by doing, and you have to open up to learn new things, because you are never too old to learn.”
She previously worked in the hospitality industry, including as a manager. “It is unjustified that employers are afraid to hire the elderly.” And that while the mentality of young people is often “zero point zero”, she thinks.
Hans den Boestert (63) came to PostNL through an employment agency. Five days a week he starts working at three in the morning to earn just a little more than the minimum wage: “Then I earn just a little more with the allowances,” he tells the NOS Radio 1 News. In his own words, he keeps up with this work well, but he has to “flatten twice a day”.
