Swiss tennis player Jil Teichmann, 24, has expressed her hope of seeing Roger Federer and Stan Wawrinka play regularly on the ATP Tour again, as she believes having them both is good for the sport of tennis.
Federer, 40, underwent knee surgery last August and has not played since. On the other hand, Wawrinka returned last March after being sidelined for 12 months due to foot surgery.
“Federer and Wawrinka are from a different generation, so I know they won’t stay here forever, but I hope they will both come back to play tournaments because they are very good for Swiss tennis and international tennis, Teichmann said, according to Sportskeeda.
In the third round of the French Open, Teichmann trailed by a set and a break but recovered to defeat former world No. 1 Azarenka 4-6 7-5 7-6 (5). “I knew I was going to fight,” said Teichmann after the win.
“One of Vika’s best qualities is that she’s a fighter, just like me. I’ve had great matches on clay, long matches. I knew I would have my chances, I have to stay calm and do my part.”
The match lasted more than three hours and Teichmann thanked the Paris crowd for making them feel at home. “The atmosphere today was incredible. i feel at home
The audience was here, supporting me and cheering me on. You gave me energy. That was very important to keep me going during the long match,” added Teichmann.
Roger Federer is impatient
During the interview, Roger Federer also opened up about how he plans to curate his tennis schedule once he’s back in action.
„[Ob meine Familie wieder zu Tennisturnieren mit mir reisen wird] is a problem I would really like to have. Because that would mean that everything is going well with the knee and the comeback,” said Federer.
“The advantage is that I don’t play 20 tournaments a year like I used to. My program will be manageable, and that’s why I say: sometimes they are there, sometimes not.” This means that the Swiss is unsure whether he can take his family to all the tournaments in his schedule.
“The effort is certainly too great for a week in Shanghai or Indian Wells. But I also know that my children would be happy to see certain places again, because that’s where we meet our friends every year,” said Federer.
