The portrait of the 69-year-old man, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows that only one side of his face was affected by the sun. According to the publication, after examining the man’s skin, he suffers from “Favre-Racouchot syndrome of photodamage to the skin, known as dermatoheliosis”, it says The Independent.

The left side of the man’s face appears heavily wrinkled as it has been constantly exposed to the ultraviolet A (UVA) rays that pass through the truck’s window. In contrast, the right side of the man’s face, who was a truck driver for 28 years, was covered and relatively unaffected by UVA rays.

What the experts say

Unfortunately, it’s nearly impossible to avoid UVA rays, as UVA rays make up “up to 95 percent of the UV radiation that reaches the Earth’s surface,” according to Skincancer.org

And while ultraviolet B (UVB) rays were originally thought to be more commonly linked to higher rates of skin cancer, according to the publication, “UVA rays have also been shown to induce substantial DNA mutations and toxicity direct, leading to the formation of skin cancer”.
