The Effects of Carbonated Drinks on Tooth Health

Hydration is essential for body functions such as temperature regulation, nutrient transport, and toxin elimination.

Obviously, carbonated water tastes much better than regular water without “bubbles”. But how beneficial is this for the body, in fact?

Carbonated water is obtained by infusing it with carbon dioxide. This produces carbonic acid with a slightly acidic pH between three and four, and the taste perceived by the taste buds is much better.

The teeth, the main ones affected by carbonated drinks

The outer layer of our teeth, tooth enamel, is the hardest tissue in the body. It consists of a mineral called hydroxyapatite that contains calcium and phosphate. Saliva is mainly water, but also contains calcium and phosphate.

Normally, there is a balance between the minerals in the teeth and the minerals in the saliva. The mouth and saliva have a pH of six to seven, but when it drops below five and a half, calcium and phosphate molecules move from the teeth and into the saliva. This can happen because of the carbonic acid in fizzy drinks.

This demineralization creates tiny pores in the tooth mineral and the enamel begins to dissolve. Initially, the pores are microscopic and can be further plugged with calcium or phosphate or by replacing calcium with fluoride.

But once the amount of lost tooth mineral reaches a certain level, the pores can no longer be plugged and the tooth tissue is permanently lost.

If the teeth are frequently bathed in the acid from carbonated drinks, more minerals can be dissolved than put back in, and there is a greater risk of tooth wear or erosion.

In general, the NHS recommends drinking between six and eight glasses of fluid a day. In addition to water, this can also include low-fat milk and sugar-free drinks, along with tea and coffee.

Plain water is a healthy and inexpensive choice to quench your thirst at any time. It has no calories and no tooth-damaging sugars, unlike many drinks on the market.
