GUADALAJARA, Jal., November 8, 2023.- The vaccine against Human Papillomavirus (HPV) indicated in the Health Sector for girls in the fifth grade of primary school or at least 11 years old; in sixth grade or at least 12 years old; in the first year of secondary school or at the age of 13, it is effective and safe, says the Researcher of the Immunology Division of the Western Biomedical Research Center (CIBO) of the Mexican Institute of Social Security (IMSS) in Jalisco, Héctor Montoya.
Through a statement, it was explained that it is at this stage of life (adolescence) where the biological is expected to have greater effectiveness because the immune tissue known as the thymus has not yet reached its maximum involution, which is a gland located in the upper part of the chest (under the sternum) whose function is to produce white blood cells (lymphocytes) that protect the body against infections and viruses.
“Prophylactic vaccination should be done before the start of sexual relations and particularly before the involution of the thymus, because when this happens, which is more or less in adolescence, after this the memory cells have already been formed and we depend more on the immune system in general,” he pointed out.
He reiterated “that is why it is ideal that they be vaccinated before adolescence so that there are some memory cells programmed to respond to the threat of the virus.”
Although various myths, the researcher indicated, surround the HPV vaccine, the truth is that there is no evidence that has been published in documents with scientific arbitration or that comes from health or official institutions or in the epidemiological surveillance systems of agencies.
“There is no reference reported. Normally this vaccine generates the expected effects of any biological, which are fever, pain at the application site, and redness. What is expected from this vaccine is that it benefits the majority of users and the harm is minimal,” said the CIBO researcher.
He explained that the vaccine applied in the health sector, including the IMSS, offers protection for several years after its application.
The vaccine is applied intramuscularly in the arm and provides protection between 98 and 100 percent against the four main serotypes, which are the ones that could develop cancer, according to the susceptibility of each person. A single dose is applied for adolescents, under the guidelines already mentioned.
He recalled that the vaccine is also applied to cisgender (CIS) and transgender (TRANS) women up to 49 years of age, with risk factors such as being carriers of HIV AIDS, this in a three-dose schedule.
“Its application is 100 percent preventive, both for girls, for what we already mentioned about the formation of protective “memory” cells, and for CIS and TRANS women living with HIV, since this makes them vulnerable to presenting HPV due to to their compromised immune system” he concluded.
