15.9 million tourists and 5 to 10 billion euros, these are, according to a parliamentary report, the economic consequences of the 2024 Olympic Games in Ile-de-France.
Paris 2024, a good cost for the Ile-de-France region? A parliamentary report hopes so. Tourism added value, professional integration, opening of contracts to small and medium-sized enterprises, the economic benefits of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games would be in a range between 5.3 billion and 10.7 billion euros “for the territory of Paris alone. ‘Ile-de-France’, according to a report by a National Assembly fact-finding mission presented on Wednesday 5 July.
The parliamentarians are partly inspired by a study by the Center for Sports Law and Economics (CDES). “The pessimistic scenario of the report would be the most significant”, estimates the sports economist Pierre Rondeau, because closer to the results observed during “previous Olympics or major international sporting events”.
Tourism would represent between a quarter and more than a third of the benefits, and international visitors “would provide 36% of the economic benefits of the Olympic Games and 18%” of the Paralympic Games, according to the report. Up to 15.9 million tourists are expected, more than a normal year, even if “a substitution phenomenon over the year and summer 2024” is to be expected, explained Renaissance MP Stéphane Mazars, co-rapporteur of the mission. The tourists attracted by the Olympics would replace, in a still unknown proportion, the usual tourists struck by “a certain discouragement”.
One euro in six paid to companies in the 93
The delivery company for the Olympic Games Solideo was given “very strong satisfaction” by the deputy for Seine-Saint-Denis Stéphane Peu (GDR-Nupes), co-rapporteur, for the “exemplary follow-up” of access to VSE/SME contracts (very small, small and medium-sized enterprises) and commitments in favor of professional integration.
The department of Seine-Saint-Denis occupies a special place in these two aspects. As it stands, 663 million euros in contracts have been awarded to nearly 1,891 VSEs/SMEs, with nearly one euro in six paid to companies in Seine-Saint-Denis, or 15.5% of the contracts. .
The parliamentarians also hailed the “excellent results” of Solideo, which had undertaken to ensure that 10% of the hours worked would be by people under professional integration contracts, that is to say unemployed people with been hired and trained with the aim of reintegrating them into the labor market. By mid-June, more than 80% of the scheduled hours had already been completed.
As for the economic impact of the conduct of the Games itself and the support of the delegations and all the players, it is currently estimated at 2.372 billion euros, i.e. the envelope of the Committee of organization of the Games (Cojo) for public contracts. “Purchases from partners”, large international and French companies such as Toyota and Alibaba, represent 47.5% of the expenditure made and the report underlines “that a part of the economic benefits will ultimately escape French companies, in proportions remaining to be determined”.
