At the same time, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras continued to maintain his tough line on international creditors, accusing the EU and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) earlier today of being the main factor in blocking talks to save Athens.
The prime minister clarified that it is about contradictions in debt restructuring.
“A significant obstacle to the agreement is the IMF’s stance on budget austerity and restructuring, while others want austerity without restructuring,” he explained.
At the same time, Tsipras said that the IMF bears “criminal responsibility” for the financial crisis in the country. In recent months, the IMF has been pushing for more cuts in the Greek pension system and an increase in VAT on some basic goods.
“The push for cuts … is most likely part of a political plan … to humiliate all the people who have suffered for the past five years through no fault of their own,” he added. According to Tsipras, the time has already come when the IMF’s proposals will have to be condemned by Europe.
