The EC is suing Bulgaria and 10 other countries over copyright directives

The European Commission filed a claim before the Court of Justice of the European Union against Bulgaria and 10 other member states for not having submitted to the Commission a notification for the adoption of measures for the transposition of two directives in the field of copyright. This was announced by the EC.

Bulgaria, Denmark, Finland, Latvia, Poland, Portugal have not submitted a notification to adopt measures for the full transposition of legislation in the field of copyright and related rights in the digital single market.

The EC also brought a claim in relation to another, more specific EU directive on intellectual property rights and related rights applicable to certain online broadcasts (Directive (EU) 2019/789). Bulgaria, Finland, Latvia, Poland and Portugal have again not submitted to the Commission a notification for the full transposition of EU rules.

Both directives aim to modernize copyright rules so that users and creators can make the most of the digital world. They protect rights holders from various sectors by stimulating the wider creation and distribution of high-quality content. They also provide greater choice of content for consumers by reducing transaction costs and facilitating the distribution of radio and television programs across the EU.
