The EC is proposing to allocate three billion euros to Belarus when it moves to democracy

The European Commission (EC) has proposed allocating € 3 billion to Belarus “once it moves to democracy”.

The proposal, which has yet to be considered by the European Union (EU) member states, should be seen as a bloc commitment to “support the aspirations of the Belarusian people for peaceful democratic change in the countries”, the EC statement said.

“It must be a real incentive for the regime to change course,” said EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Joseph Borrell. “The EU remains fully committed to a democratic Belarus.”

The money will be divided into grants and loans to stabilize the country’s economy and create jobs, as well as to reform institutions to make them more democratic.

EC President Urzula von der Leiena said that the EU supports democratic change in the country.

“When Belarus begins its democratic change, the EU will be here to help,” Leiena said.
