The EC approved state aid for Romanian farmers due to the severe drought-Agro Plovdiv – 2024-10-24 11:45:00

The European Commission approved, according to EU rules for state aiddiagram on Romania, worth 400 million euros (2 billion lei) to compensate farmers for damages suffered due to the severe land in the period between September 2023 and August 2024.

Prayer for rain commissioned by farmers in Romania in 2022.

The scheme is open to farmers of 39 selected crops (such as wheat, triticale, rye, barley, oats, canola, peas, sunflower and maize) that have been directly affected by the drought. To benefit from the aid, farmers must have lost more than 30% of their autumn 2023-summer 2024 crop as a result of drought. According to the scheme, the aid will be in the form of direct grants. The maximum amount of aid is €200 (RON 1000) per hectare for 100% loss, which does not exceed 30% of the eligible costs. The scheme will run until 31 December 2024.

The Commission found that the scheme was necessary and appropriate to compensate Romanian farmers for the losses incurred due to this extreme weather event. In addition, the Commission found that the scheme is proportionate, as it is limited to the necessary minimum and has a limited impact on competition and trade between Member States. On this basis, the Commission approved the Romanian scheme under EU state aid rules.
