The Ebola outbreak in Uganda has officially ended

Four months ago, the Ebola virus broke out again in the East African country of Uganda. WHO reports 142 cases. 56 people have died from the virus, including 6 health workers.

It was the first outbreak in 10 years of the lesser known Sudanese variant of the virus. This has caused concern, because there is still no vaccine against this variant. However, the government has managed to bring the epidemic under control. After two complete incubation periods with no new infections, the country was officially declared Ebola-free.

“We have successfully overcome the spread of Ebola,” said Ugandan Health Minister Jane Ruth Aceng. With these words you announced the end of the epidemic in the district where the first infection was detected.
