If you took out a sniper rifle and shot at the moon, it would change size. For years, fans have tried to explain why this was added to the game. Now, in 2023, thanks to new information from a former developer, we know the truth.

In his blog post entitled: “Why the Moon Changes Size When Shot,” Vermeil claims that this joke was the result of a quarrel between artists who could not decide on what size the game moon should be in the night sky of GTA III.

“The artists gave me a texture for the moon in GTA III. I placed it in the sky, made sure it was visible at night and that it was a reasonable size,” Vermeil explained in his post.

A few days later, artists from Rockstar North approached him and asked if he could change the size of the moon. Vermeil replied that he could, and asked whether the artists wanted it to be larger or smaller. It was then that it turned out that some artists wanted the moon to be larger, thereby making it more “cinematic.” But other artists wanted, on the contrary, that the moon be smaller and more “realistic”. After this dispute dragged on, Vermeil proposed a solution.

“I suggested making the size of the moon changeable in the game,” Vermeil said. “This way, players were able to choose the size of the moon without any of the designers being left out. Since I was working on a sniper rifle, I made the moon change three sizes (small, medium, large) when the player shoots at it.”
