?? Lumen Christi ??, with the threefold call: ?? Christ the light ?? the resurrection celebration begins on Easter vigil. The Latin call gives the good news, the triumph of light over darkness, the triumph of life over death. The burning Easter candle is a symbol of the risen Lord. It embodies the presence of the one who says: “I am the light of the world”.
With regard to the Corona year, the Easter candle in St. Andreas has the motto: “I’m here”, it says in a press release from the St. Andreas Church Foundation. The white color of the candle represents hope and new life. Like all liturgical candles, it contains a certain amount of beeswax. It goes back to the earlier tradition that only the finest materials are to be used for liturgical use. The large blood-red cross forms the basis for the four round medallions and the golden cross in the middle with the risen One.
Vine tendrils adorn the Easter candle
The Easter candle is covered with tendrils and represents Christ as the risen one. I am the vine. It is the last of a series of seven “I am” words of Jesus transmitted in the Gospel according to John. Christ asks us to abide in him in order to bear fruit there.
In the four medallions, heaven and earth touch each other, the golden world of God and the world of man shown in green and yellow.
The lower medallion in the longitudinal bar shows the event ?? the burning bush ?? from the Old Testament. At the top of the medallion, the Pentecost event is shown. Left the open Bible with the prologue of St. John “In the beginning was the word and the word was with God” and right the event of the Lord’s Supper.

A new motto every year
In the middle we meet the risen Christ. Christ is clothed in the white robe of the resurrection. The wounds on the hands and feet are visible. At the same time he knocks on the door with his right hand. ??I’m there!?? We are allowed to open our door, the door of our hearts, to the Lord. ?? I stand in front of the door and knock. “
When the Easter candle is lit by the Easter fire in front of the church, the priest says: Christ, yesterday and today, beginning and end, alpha and omega. His is time and eternity. His is the power and glory forever. Five nails, made in Karlstadt from semi-precious stones, are inserted into the candle. They stand for the wounds of Jesus. Placed on the candlestick, the Easter candle symbolizes the exalted Christ as the victor over death.
The candle was freely modeled by members of OMTH and donated to St. Andrew’s Church. For ten years the Easter candle has been put under a new motto every year. It is one of the largest Easter candles in the Diocese of Würzburg.
