The east in the city ranking: No level, but potential

Berlin / Leipzig – Quality of life, economic strength, real estate market: the big cities in the south-east did not make it into the top 20 in Germany in a ranking by the Institute of German Economy (IW / Cologne).

This was announced on Thursday by ImmoScout24 and “Wirtschaftswoche”, which commissioned the study. In contrast, several municipalities impressed with their development potential: Leipzig secured third place in the so-called dynamic ranking.

The annual study examines the situation of all 71 independent cities with more than 100,000 inhabitants in Germany. In the so-called level ranking, 51 indicators from the labor market, economy, quality of life and real estate market were compared.

The result for the big cities in the region is rather sobering: Dresden came out on top with 30th place, followed by Jena (32), Leipzig (37) and Erfurt (45). The best-placed cities in Saxony-Anhalt are Magdeburg (54) and Halle (55).

In contrast, the institute assessed the development potential of the cities in the south-east as significantly more positive.

Leipzig landed in third place in the dynamic ranking after Berlin and Heilbronn and thus improved significantly compared to the previous year (eighth place). Halle (18) and Dresden (20) also achieved comparatively good places.

The development of 36 indicators from the labor market, economy, quality of life and real estate market within five years was examined.
