KOMPAS.com – Another name for the earth’s crust is the lithosphere layer, or what in English is called crust.
The lithosphere is the outermost layer or part of the Earth. Its average thickness is estimated at 70 kilometers.
What is the earth’s crust?
Understanding the earth’s crust
Reporting from the Study site, the earth’s crust is the outermost layer of the Earth. Its thickness is much thinner than the other layers that make up planet Earth.
Even though it tends to be thin, the existence of the earth’s crust is very important. Because one of the functions of the lithosphere is to provide life on Earth.

According to Sucipto Hariyanto, et al in the book Abiotic Environment (2019), the meaning of the earth’s crust is the outermost part of the earth’s mantle.
As we know, the earth’s mantle has two layers, namely the inner and outer layers, where the outer layer is the earth’s crust.
Quoted from the book Earth and Space (2021), the lithosphere is the outermost layer of the earth’s crust and has a thickness of around 70 kilometers.
The earth’s crust is composed of hard rocks, clay, volcanic ash, sand, gravel and other materials.
In conclusion, the meaning of the earth’s crust is the outermost layer of the earth composed of rocks, with an average thickness of 70 kilometers.

Characteristics of the earth’s crust
In the book Earth is in danger of being destroyed (2013) by Dedi, the earth’s crust is divided into two parts, namely the oceanic crust and the continental crust.
The thickness of oceanic crust is between 5 and 10 kilometers. Meanwhile, continental crust is around 20 to 70 kilometers thick.
Basalt is the main rock that makes up the oceanic crust. As for the continental crust, its main constituent rock is granite.
According to John Malam in the book Earth (2005), the following are the characteristics of the earth’s crust:
- The earth’s crust is the layer where living things live
- The thickest layer can reach 65 to 70 kilometers
- The surface has mountains, vast land areas, and ocean trenches.
Other features of the earth’s crust are hard and dense, and formed as a result of the earth’s mantle freezing.
