The mayor of Florida, Guillermo López, together with the Coordinator of the CECOED Cono Arrua received Army authorities and the geologist Leda Sánchez along with the team of scientists from the Geophysical Observatory of the Faculty of Sciences to evaluate data on the earthquake that occurred in the department.
Sánchez was accompanied by the engineer Enrique Latorre, the technicians of the National Directorate of Mining and Geology (Dinamige) Hernán Castro and Judith Loureiro
After the conference, it was decided that to improve the measurements, a registration station would be installed on a National Army property, the Engineer Battalion II. In this sense, there will be an agreement between the Municipality of Florida and the Observatory to support the work they carry out with resources.
Leda Sánchez informed the media present that the earthquake that occurred was 4.6 on the Richter scale.
The incident occurred in the north-central area of the department, in Muelle del Timote, between Polanco del Yi and Capilla del Sauce.
“The event that occurred on Saturday may have replicas,” said Sánchez. “As of Sunday at 3:00 p.m., no replication of the magnitude that can be recorded in our sensors had occurred,” he added.
The geologist said that they will continue to “monitor the area”, since taking into account the “antecedents of March and November 2016 and Carmelo of 2017” in those situations there were “some aftershocks”.
Sánchez explained that “it was not a serious event, it did not cause damage,” but it did cause an alert in the population. “
“Serious events occur with epicenters where there is a greater concentration of population because damage is generated,” he said, saying that if this had happened in Montevideo, the situation would be “another story.”
“We must collect the information of all the inhabitants who have felt this event and thus make a serious estimate of the intensity of this earthquake,” he said.
