Earth spins faster every year. This is also said to make scientists confused.
Since 1970, 27 seconds have been added to the official time to compensate for the slowing of the Earth’s rotation.
Leap seconds were last added in 2016 on New Year’s Eve. But on July 19, 2020 the day on Earth suddenly became 1.4602 milliseconds shorter than a full 24 hours.
That makes the day the shortest ever recorded.
Throughout 2021, the day we go through is almost 0.5 milliseconds faster than 24 hours.
“It is true that the Earth is rotating faster now than it has been in the last 50 years. It is very likely that negative leap seconds would be required if the Earth’s rotation rate were to increase, but it is too early to say whether this is possible,” said Peter Whibberley, senior researcher at the National Physical Laboratory’s Time and Frequency Group told The Telegraph.
So, can the event that the Earth rotates faster harm the Earth?
Scientists say it takes 100 years for humans to be able to feel time go faster.
The acceleration of time can also be problematic for human-developed technologies such as communication and navigation systems.
These technologies generally depend on the position of the sun, moon and stars.
Time changes, even if only milliseconds, can affect this technology. Communication and navigation systems will not work optimally until they experience interference.
Meanwhile, the occurrence of faster rotation of the earth to shorten the time in one day still requires a lot of research and its impact on humans.
