If you had enough time to tinker you could get a lot out of it even in the early days of Blender 1

It has always had enormous potential due to its flexible configuration and the large amount of possibilities through a relatively limited set of tools. Actually, everything that was possible with the commercial packages was possible, but because you only had the basic tools, it was sometimes more work.
