The E-6B Mercury “Doomsday Plane” – America’s Plan for Nuclear Apocalypse

A real doomsday plane. This is the name of the E-6B Mercury “Doomsday plane” aircraft built by the American aeronautics giant Boeing. Its goal ? To allow the President of the United States to be in contact with his fleet of nuclear ballistic missile submarines in the tragic event that his country is practically annihilated by the effects of a thermonuclear war. These devices dating from the Cold War were getting old and began to be modernized by the company Northrop Grumman at a cost of 103 million euros.

The first fully refurbished aircraft just entered service. Northrop Grumman said the E-6B has been fitted with five new technologies, improving its command, control and communications systems. Specifically, this aircraft is equipped with specialized equipment that enables seamless discussion between its operators and the Navy’s submarine fleet, even when the submarines are submerged. This crucial capability ensures that the president’s orders can be carried out if the submarines are to launch their nukes. For this, the E-6B Mercury can stay in the air for more than 72 hours with in-flight refueling.

In addition, this aircraft measuring more than 46 meters long can cover a distance of about 12,000 kilometers in one go. The craft has a VLF (very low frequency) communication system to contact and give orders to American submarines diving around the world. More surprisingly, it will also carry a communication system using waves that reverberate on meteorites close to the Earth, in order to compensate for the destruction of satellites that could result from an all-out war. In addition, the systems on board the device are reinforced to withstand electromagnetic loads (EMP) in order to be able to remain operational, always in the event of a nuclear conflict.

Last March, the United States sent one of its E-6Bs to Iceland. It is extremely rare to see an aircraft of this type in Europe. The choice of Iceland makes sense because it is certain that US Navy ballistic missile submarines patrol the Atlantic as part of the US strategic deterrent. According to military analysts, this is a show of American force to remind Vladimir Putin’s government that Washington watches over the security of NATO member countries in Europe.
