The Dutch tennis players were eliminated from the United Cup in Australia on Tuesday. Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof won the final doubles match, but that was just not enough for a place in the quarter-finals.
Schuurs and Koolhof were too strong for Donna Vekic and Ivan Dodig in a blood-curdling doubles match. They survived a match point and eventually struck themselves: 6-7 (3), 6-3 and 14-12.
The Netherlands still had a chance to go to the quarter-finals as one of the best numbers two, but lost out on the basis of the game balance. Norway became group winner, while Croatia won the battle for second place by one game.
Earlier in the day, Tallon Greekpoor and Arantxa Rus had already lost on behalf of the Netherlands. Greek track had to admit its superiority in Borna Coric: the score was 6-7 (4) and 4-6. Russian turned out to be no match for Vekic: 3-6, 6-3 and 1-6.

Frustrated Greek track misses break opportunities
Greekpoor (ATP-23) missed two break opportunities against Coric (ATP-37) at the end of the first set. The Croat won the tiebreak, to the frustration of Greek Spoor, who hit his racket on the ground. He was broken twice in the second set, while the leader of the Netherlands only posted one break. Coric struck on his third match point after two hours of play.
Shortly afterwards, Rus lost to Vekic in three sets: 3-6, 6-3 and 1-6. The Dutch (WTA-51) came back well in the second set, but the number 24 in the world was a size too big in the last act.
The Netherlands had started the tournament well on Saturday with a 2-1 win over Norway. Eighteen countries participate in the United Cup, the successor to the Hopman Cup. For many tennis players, the United Cup is a preparation tournament for the Australian Open, which starts on January 14.
