The Dutch pot is now popular among tourists

Stew, kale and smoked sausage: Dutch food is becoming increasingly popular in the city. Old Dutch ships were already popular with Amsterdam residents, but tourists are also increasingly appreciating the ‘stemppot’. “It’s fine, I love it.”

There are five restaurants in a row on Leidsekruisstraat where people can taste Dutch specialties. All these places are completely full of guests every day. But what do people find so special about the Dutch pot? “It tastes very good for a reasonable price,” said a tourist with a smile.

Hap-Hmm is one of those restaurants that people have to turn off every day, because otherwise it’s too busy, according to owner Bobbie Douma. “People are actually queuing up. You don’t have to just walk up and go in here, you have to wait a while. So you have to call ahead.”

Douma thinks it’s fun. “We will have dinner at 4:30pm and the guests will arrive at 5pm.” In the restaurant there are two non-bookable tables, these are the extension tables. “At these tables you don’t have to say you’re coming, you can sit down. This way you’re never alone.”

Eveline Doornhegge of Koninklijke Horeca Nederland recognizes the popularity of restaurants with old Dutch dishes. “The popularity increases, especially in winter, for example pasta restaurants or ice cream parlors switch to Dutch food in winter.”

Because of his job, Douma has been eating Dutch food every week for years, but he never gets tired of it. “No, it’s never boring. Except at the weekend, then I go to the Chinese and get a nice baby pangpang.”
