The police in Mallorca are used to incidents with tourists, says Zoutberg. “Drunk young people climbing the hotels, drug nuisance. Those are things that happen here, but the police say: we have also been struck by this ourselves, because we have never experienced this either. An incident where it looks like pure arbitrariness, purely on meet someone who ends up dead on the street.”
Spain is still waiting for the extradition of the eight Dutch friends who are wanted for the assault. In the meantime, the Netherlands says it has not yet received the request. But that doesn’t mean Spain doesn’t like it, says Zoutberg. “There are a number of options on the table. One is for the boys to be sent back to the island to be interrogated here and to participate in a reconstruction.”
But a local journalist said he had heard other things from the police: that Spanish detectives would go to the Netherlands to hear the boys. “That’s another option that sounds practical in itself, rather than waiting for all the paperwork.”
The suspects have all been identified. “Police cameras are everywhere along the boulevard and at least two cameras have recorded what happened.”
