The Dutch flag has only been suspended once at sunrise at half mast this 4 May NOW

The Dutch were allowed to hang the flag at half mast once on Monday. Normally this is allowed on commemoration of the dead, the day on which we commemorate the victims of the war, only from 6 p.m., but because of the corona crisis, the cabinet has made an exception for this 4 May.

The sun rose at 6:03 AM and sets again at 9:10 PM. The flag hangs at half-mast on all government buildings on Monday. Municipalities, provinces and embassies follow this flag instruction.

If you do not have a flag at home, but still want to show an expression, you can use a commemorative poster (pdf) and hang it in the window, reports the National Committee May 4 and 5.

Because of the corona measures, commemoration mainly takes place at home. At 8 p.m., the whole of the Netherlands is silent for two minutes. To create a sense of togetherness, the committee called on musicians to play the traditional tattoo signal at 7:59 pm.

The National Remembrance Day on the Dam in Amsterdam will continue this year, but without an audience. Only King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima, Prime Minister Mark Rutte, Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema and committee chairman Gerdi Verbeet will be present.

The National Commemoration can be followed from 7.50 pm on NPO1, NPO2 and NPO3.

Citizens may flag at their own discretion, but there are a number of guidelines:

  • It doesn’t matter how big the flag is, except that the length is proportional to the width as 3: 2.
  • The flag should never touch the ground in a raised situation.
  • In principle, the bottom point of the flag should not be attached to the mast; the flag should fly. In the event that the flag otherwise touches the ground, an exception may be made.
  • Only the Dutch flag is hung at half-mast, other flags are not. It is allowed to hang several flags at half-mast.
  • Finally, the flag is always hoisted full and only then hanged at half-mast.
