The number of hours in BEL, mathematics and geography is increasing
The Ministry of Education and Science has announced that it is reducing the length of classes for junior high school students. In classes V, VI and VII, the bell will now ring after 40 instead of after 45 minutes in all schools as it is currently in classes III and IV. Now this is the length of classes in junior high school only where it is taught in two shifts.
The hours of the three graduations are reduced according to the instructions of the Ministry of Health (MoH) and with the aim of equality for all students of these classes. The change is made through amendments to two regulations of the Minister of Education and Science, which were published for public discussion – on the curriculum and on the organization of activities in school education. If passed, they will go into effect at the beginning of the 2022-2023 school year.
Teachers – with higher salaries from September 1
The introduction of 40-minute lessons will reduce the total learning time. This will affect the assimilation of the material, especially in key subjects such as Bulgarian language and literature and mathematics, which are studied with the largest number of hours. Therefore, the Ministry of Education and Culture proposes to increase the number of lessons in Bulgarian language and literature by half an hour per week in grades V and VI and in mathematics – also by half an hour in grades V, VI and VII. In addition, the surveys conducted among teachers and students about the curricula show the need to increase the geography and economics classes in the 5th grade – again by half an hour a week. The increase in the number of hours in the three subjects is in accordance with the Law on Preschool and School Education and with the requirements of the Ministry of Health, which allow a total weekly workload of 32 study hours.
MES awarded 25 excellent students from all over the country
The data are conclusive that Bulgarian students have the shortest compulsory schooling time in Europe, say the Ministry of Education and Culture. The total number of compulsory hours in grades I to X inclusive, equated to astronomical hours, is 7040. The average for countries in Europe is 8617 hours, with most countries in the range between 8000 and 9000 hours. In Bulgaria, first-graders and second-graders study the least – 411 and 429 astronomy hours per year, respectively. Our students in grades III, IV, V and VI also lag behind their peers in many European countries by several hundred hours per year.
