The Dual Identity of Swallow: Flip Flops and Tires in Jakarta

Swallow flip-flops are already famous as legendary footwear that are easy to find in Indonesia. But that footwear brand also has the same name as Swallow tires.

It turns out that the two brands have been held by different companies. The Swallow tire brand is currently processed by PT Industri Karet Deli (IKD).

Interestingly, the Swallow flip-flops logo is also similar to the tire brand. Gunawan, always Domestic Sales of PT. IKD said that Swallow’s footwear and tires used to be one company.

“So many people ask (about flip-flops), because the logo is exactly the same, there is no difference. In 1956 it was still the same. We started with rubber materials, sandals and shoes,” said Gunawan in Central Jakarta, Tuesday (1 /8/2023).

However, he said that Swallow’s tires and flip-flops are now different companies. Although both are engaged in the rubber processing industry.

“The factories are still close, but the companies are different. At the moment there is no relationship. It used to be one company. The last one was in the 1970s,” he explained.

IKD’s three biggest tire brands are Delium, Deli Tire and Swallow.

Quoted from the company’s official website, Swallow flip flops are produced by a company called PT Sinar Jaya Prakarsa, a factory whose head office is located in Tegal Alur, Kalideres, DKI Jakarta.

In addition, currently Swallow’s products have been exported to various countries around the world such as the Philippines, Malaysia and Somalia. Swallow itself is one of the most popular and oldest brands of flip-flops produced at the Sinar Jaya Prakarsa factory.

Sinar Jaya Prakarsa explained that before rubber sandals were introduced and mass-produced in the world, Japanese zori or Japanese-style sandals were the most popular type of sandal. It was primarily introduced by American soldiers returning home in sandals from Japan during World War II (1940).

Japanese zori are traditional Japanese footwear made of rice straw and lacquered wood and are often worn together with the traditional Japanese dress, the kimono. After the appearance of Japanese zori, product consumers realized that because of the materials used in Japanese zori, sandals became slippery and stiff.
