The drop in the bucket

The bKV offers many advantages: Access to private medical care, tariffs without medical examinations and waiting times, immediate insurance protection, even for recommended or ongoing treatments, and the opportunity to use extensive services related to health. Word is getting around that the bKV offers a perfect supplement to the protection provided by statutory health insurance, a real added value. Because the bKV is growing. The association of private health insurance companies, PKV association for short, reported an increase of 355 percent compared to 2015. Of course, that sounds good when 1.59 million people and 15,850 companies have opted for a bKV offer. The past two Corona years in particular have drastically revealed one’s own vulnerability and changed the awareness of employers and employees. Without a doubt, the pandemic has led to a significant increase in awareness and greater acceptance of the bKV. However: you have to take a closer look at the figures from the private health insurance association. In view of more than 3.2 million companies and around 45 million employees, these 1.59 million are no more than the famous drop in the ocean. And of course the question arises as to why the sparks don’t really jump over? After all, 42 private health insurers are active in the market. Nevertheless: only 15 companies offer a bKV. Carsten Maschmeyer once said in an interview with our magazine that insurance is a push and not a pull product. And that also applies to the bKV. The bKV is currently a delicate plant. But it has enormous growth potential. Because it brings a noticeable benefit. In order for the spark to fly, however, not only employers and employees need to be convinced. You also need a lot of experienced mediators. And here it is still lacking. As long as nothing changes there, the bKV will hardly be able to leave its niche.
