Is there a link between the excessive ease of the examination of the driver’s license and the very higher mortality on the American roads?
In France, the driving test is renowned for its seriousness and difficulty. Young drivers must first measure themselves against the highway code test, the success rate of which is currently 50.5%. These students must then pass the practical driving license test, whose success rate is 58%. These tests are also very expensive, with an average budget of €1,800 for each learner driver.
But in the United States, this test seems much simpler as you can see in the video below. In addition to an examination of the highway code with often trivial questions, the procedure then provides for a practical test which can take place directly with the candidate’s personal car. It costs much less, can last only a quarter of an hour and the examiner poses no particular difficulty. This is why the pass rate for the exam is around 80%.
Twice as many deaths as at home
This lack of training for young American drivers undoubtedly contributes to the poor accident figures in the United States, a country not helped either by its poorer quality road network than here. Compared to France and related to the number of motorists, there are indeed twice as many deaths in road accidents compared to France.
