The man who died on Friday 23 December at the East-West Link near Peperpot City in the Commewijne district he’s been killed is the 70-year-old pedestrian Krishnapersad Kandhai. He was in the middle of the road when he was hit by 35-year-old motorist Santoesha G. and died instantly, Suriname police said today.
According to preliminary investigations, the driver was driving on the east-west junction road shortly before the collision. He came from the direction of Richelieu and went in the direction of the road to Peperpot. Near Peperpot City, at the T-junction formed by the East-West Link and Salawatistraat, he suddenly saw a man standing in the road.
On that occasion Santoesha failed to brake in time and hit the pedestrian with the fatal consequence for the man, writes the Surinamese police.
A witness stated that he had driven behind the motorist and swerved suddenly for a dead dog lying on the road surface. He also heard a bang, which brought the vehicle in front of him to an abrupt stop. He got out of the car and on that occasion he saw that the pedestrian had been run over.
When the police arrived, law enforcement officers found Santoesha, G., a 35-year-old motorist, complaining of pain all over her body. A witness was also found and the pedestrian, who was no longer showing signs of life, was lying on the left half of the roadway. A doctor officially confirmed the death of the traffic victim.
The driver’s license of the driver who was not intoxicated was confiscated pending investigation. After being brought before a deputy prosecutor, she was released. Krishnapersad’s lifeless body was seized by the police for an autopsy at the order of the public prosecutor’s office.
