Nearly 500,000 drivers are underemployed across the European Union. Dimitar Dimitrov from the Chamber of Motor Carriers in Bulgaria stated before Bulgaria ON AIRthat when there are no drivers, the service becomes more expensive, and that cataclysms are ahead in this direction.
“We have to realize that this is an extremely difficult profession. There is a shortage of 500,000 drivers in Europe. Worldwide, the number is 3 million. In our country, there is a shortage of about 20,000 drivers. The forecasts are that by 2028, this shortage will double bigger. About 40% of drivers worldwide are over 55 years old,” explained the guest of “Bulgaria morning”.
According to him, our country needs to very urgently ease the regime under which it imports drivers from third countries. In our country, the procedure takes 6 months until the candidate passes all the checks. After that, he faces a number of other difficulties, it became clear from Dimitrov’s words.
“We are prevented in every way from doing business in Europe. The second direction that needs to be worked on is the training of new personnel. About 8% of the drivers in Europe are under 25 years of age. The threshold for entering this is very high profession,” the guest also pointed out.
Dimitar Dimitrov announced that in Bulgaria the drivers receive around 3,000 euros. The salary reaches a larger amount in some companies.
“In Bulgaria, the net remuneration is even higher than in the entire EU. The legislation allows a large part of the amount to be in the form of travel allowances. The drivers of internal transport take less”, said the representative of the Chamber of Motor Carriers.
“Some of the tunnels are still under repair and the drivers are the most affected. It is scary at the borders and you have to wait for days. It is clear that there is no way to fix the roads with a magic wand, but there are other actions that can be taken” Dimitrov pointed out.
