Todor Petrov admitted that he took “medicines that are not prohibited, but have a proportion of cannabis”
The Sofia District Court decided that the 33-year-old man, who was caught driving with a record blood alcohol level of 5.11 at the beginning of the week, remains in custody. According to the magistrates, there is a reasonable presumption of authorship. The officers who stopped him for a check-up said that he answered their questions incoherently and his eyes wandered. The driver himself admitted that he had taken cannabis. But he flatly denies drinking alcohol.

In the courtroom, Todor Petrov said that before he was stopped on the road, he rinsed his mouth with mouthwash. “I explained to the law enforcement authorities that after seeing the drug, I was shocked. I don’t drink alcohol. Yes, I have taken medications that are not prohibited, but have a cannabis ratio,” explained Petrov.
However, the court considered that what he had done was of high public danger and it is possible that the defendant would commit a new crime if released.
“We have evidence that he committed two acts. Expertises have been appointed which are not ready. We have records of robbery convictions back in the past. We also have data on an administrative punishment imposed on him for possession of narcotic substances”, said Svetlana Kostova – prosecutor from the Sofia District Prosecutor’s Office.
The decision is not final and is subject to appeal.
