The Dijon Criminal Court (Côte-d’Or) judges this Wednesday, January 5, the driver arrested for causing the death of Enzo Sanchez, 20, on June 27. The respondent is suspected of having driven at an excessive speed and of not having respected a red light when he collided with the young man’s car.
On June 27, 2021, the young Enzo Sanchez, 20, was killed while driving his vehicle, hit by a driver in Dijon (Côte-d’Or). The driver, arrested for manslaughter, will be tried by the Dijon Criminal Court this Wednesday, January 5. He is suspected of having driven at excessive speed on the evening of the incident and of running a red light.
The alleged perpetrator is on parole and will therefore arrive free at his trial. He still denies not having obeyed the signs on June 27. The victim’s father, Nicolas Sanchez, hopes the truth will emerge from the hearing. “We just want him to have his actions that night and just admit his mistakes.”, he confided to us last October 24, during the white march in homage to Enzo.
The driver in question is prosecuted for “manslaughter following a manifest and deliberate violation of the obligation of prudence and security”. He risks 5 years imprisonment and a 75,000 euro fine. That evening, he had also injured 5 people, including one serious, all passengers in Enzo Sanchez’s vehicle.
The disappearance of the young man of 20 years had aroused a strong emotion last June. In order to denounce “drivers who are aware of driving fast and breaking the Highway Code”, Nicolas Sanchez had launched a online petition, addressed to the Minister of Justice, Éric Dupont-Moretti. This petition asked in particular not to “close our eyes to this social phenomenon which is wreaking havoc” and had collected over 10,000 signatures.
In addition, a video-protection camera has since been installed at the scene of the tragedy, at the intersection of Boulevard Carnot and Rue de Mirande. “I wanted this camera to be installed. It is a tool which makes it possible to detect, locate and video over-mark road incivilities […] I had the opportunity to receive the father and grandmother of the young man. It was a drama that took place that day “, explained the first assistant to the town hall of Dijon, Nathalie Koenders, when the equipment was installed in November.
In mainland France, 2,756 people were killed on the road last year according to figures from the Ministry of the Interior published last October.
