The Drew Barrymore Show Sparks Controversy Amid Writers’ Strike

celebrities’The Drew Barrymore Show’ by Drew Barrymore (48) will soon return, although the writers in Hollywood are still on strike after months. Writers’ union WGA (Writers Guild of America) has now reacted angrily and has already announced a protest against the show, writes ‘The Hollywood Reporter’.

Drew Barrymore explained in a post on Instagram that she will adhere to union guidelines. According to her, no writers will be involved in the new season, which starts on September 18. Nor will any actors sit down to talk about their work. Barrymore states that she fully supports her choice. “Our show was created for sensitive times and has only worked by conveying what is going on in the real world,” she wrote.

The decision has not gone down well with the WGA, which has planned a demonstration outside the studio. “We do this with every program recorded during the strike,” a spokesperson told ‘The Hollywood Reporter’. When the writers’ strike began in May, Barrymore had decided to withdraw as presenter of the ‘MTV Movie & TV Awards’. She did this out of solidarity with the script writers. “But I now also make the choice to come back first, for our show, which may have my name on it, but this is so much bigger than just me.”

Exception

Under the WGA’s strike rules, most daytime talk shows are allowed to continue running because many of them do not employ unionized writers. Two exceptions are “The Drew Barrymore Show” and “The Talk,” which were shut down at the start of the strike and then began running rebroadcasts, as did the late-night talk shows.

The writers stopped work in May after negotiations broke down. They demanded, among other things, higher wages and better rules for the use of artificial intelligence in making films and series. In July, the actors’ union SAG-AFTRA joined the strike, which brought many productions to a standstill.
