According to the magazine VarietyAfter it was renewed in January for a fourth year on CBS, “The Drew Barrymore Show” is scheduled to premiere on September 18, but actors who appear as guests in the upcoming season will have to follow strike rules, which This includes not discussing or promoting their new projects.
However, although Drew is originally an actress, her work presenting the daytime program does not constitute a violation of the strike rules, especially since CBS is one of the channels that supports the rights of strikers, as informed sources told the magazine.
It is noteworthy that “The Drew Barrymore Show” is an American talk show, co-presented by several female media figures, in addition to Barrymore, and it was shown for the first time on September 14, 2020.
Full compliance with strike rules
In Drew Barrymore’s post announcing her return with a new season, she spoke of her solidarity with the striking Screenwriters Guild, stressing that it was the main reason she decided to resign from her position as host of the MTV Movie and Television Awards last May.
She said: “I did what I thought was the appropriate thing at that time to express my full solidarity with them.” On the other hand, she pointed out that her program did not stop due to the strike, because the last episode of its last season was on April 20, 2023.
She stressed her commitment to the strike rules that prevent the promotion of films and programs, noting that her program, which was launched amid the Corona crisis, was the voice of the people and a discussion of the changes that occurred in the world in those circumstances.
She also talked about the reason for her solidarity with the writers, describing her feelings in the first week of the strike. She said that she lived in a state of conflict between the rightful demands of the strikers, and between photography studios, live broadcast networks, and television channel programming.
Official comment
After Drew announced her imminent return to her talk show, the American Eastern Writers Guild tweeted on the X platform, describing the program as amazing and planning to return without preparing and setting a plan for the episodes.
The association’s tweet made it clear that the program received its support, as did the Screenwriters Syndicate, and even Hollywood stars, especially since it would be a window for sit-ins through the media, but it warned that in the event of any violation of the strike rules, the union would have other action.
The @DrewBarrymoreTV Show is a WGA covered, struck show that is planning to return without its writers. The Guild has, and will continue to, picket struck shows that are in production during the strike. Any writing on “The Drew Barrymore Show” is in violation of WGA strike rules.
