Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg I look forward to metaverse like the future of the Internet. Unfortunately, Zuck’s dream was made fun of by his fellow tech company bosses.
Several tech leaders, including Snap CEO Evan Spiegel and Xbox chief Phil Spencer, were recently asked what he thought of the metaverse as he spoke at the Wall Street Journal’s Tech Live Conference event. Both have surprising answers and seem to mock the concept of the metaverse currently under discussion.
“The last thing I want to do when I get home from work at the end of a long day is live on the computer,” Snap CEO Evan Spiegel said, followed by audience laughter, as quoted by Fortune, Monday (31 / 10/2022).
Phil Spencer, who is the CEO of Microsoft Gaming, is also less comfortable with the metaverse concept. Spencer even called the metaverse a bad video game.
“I would get in trouble if I said that, but this is a poorly developed video game,” Spencer said.
“To build metaverse what does a meeting room look like? I feel like it’s not a place where I want to spend most of my time. “
Greg Joswiak, Apple’s senior vice president of global marketing, also said he would never use the word metaverse. Joswiak’s words were also shared by Apple Software SVP Craig Federighi.
Joswiak and Federighi aren’t the only Apple executives downplaying the metaverse concept. Not long ago, Apple CEO Tim Cook said that many people don’t understand the definition of a metaverse.
“I always thought it was important for people to understand something. And I’m not too sure the average person can tell you what the metaverse is,” Cook told Dutch media Bright.
Meta alone has so far spent more than $ 15 billion to develop the project metaverse. Although he is still losing money, Zuckerberg is optimistic that this project will be seen as something big in the next few years.
A recent Wall Street Journal report claimed that Meta’s virtual reality world called Horizon World has lost hundreds of thousands of users. In its third quarter 2022 financial report, the Metaverse business also reported a loss of $ 3.6 billion.
