The dream of going to the World Cup in Qatar »news latinapress

The Argentine national football team has been unbeaten in 35 games and last year won the Copa America final against Brazil. “La Albiceleste” hopes to get another victory after the 1978 and 1986 World Cups, the latter with soccer star Diego Maradona, who passed away in 2020. The tournament in Qatar, which will likely be the last of 35-year-old Lionel Messi , will start on November 20 and fans from all over the world, from England to Japan, are preparing to travel to the Middle Eastern country. Many Argentines are investing all their savings to go to the World Cup in Qatar to cheer on their team, one of this year’s favorites and scorer, Lionel Messi.

“Come on fans, don’t stop cheering, if we all shout together we can do it because we have Lionel (Messi) on the pitch and Diego is playing in the sky”, the fans sang, alluding to Maradona, at a great farewell barbecue at Sarmiento Park in Buenos Aires, waving a flag with Messi holding the trophy and Maradona exulting from the clouds. Football is a passion in Argentina and although the country is experiencing a severe economic crisis and inflation is estimated to hit 100% this year, fans are tightening their belts to travel to Qatar. Traveling abroad has become more expensive for Argentines in recent months due to the depreciation of the peso. In addition to limiting access to foreign currency at the official exchange rate, at which the dollar is quoted at 159.34 pesos, the exchange rate for overseas credit card charges was raised, charged at 330 pesos per dollar.
