The Paris 2024 Olympic Games continue to be a topic of conversation despite having ended last week. One of the biggest controversies centred on Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who was harshly questioned after being disqualified from a world championship for not passing gender tests and was still allowed to compete in France.
The athlete ignored the criticism and not only won the gold medal in her category, but also filed a complaint for “digital lynching” with a prosecutor in Paris. Back in Algeria, her native country, a beauty salon located on the outskirts of the capital – Algiers – gave her a drastic makeover that involved makeup and hair.
The video posted on the Beauty Code salon’s Instagram shows Khelif as the world knew her, without makeup, with her hair tied up and boxing gloves; that’s how she won the medal. After a transition, the Algerian went on to sport a colorful blouse, earrings, a hairstyle with her hair down, accessories and pink makeup. She also has her Olympic medal on display.
“She didn’t waste time in beauty salons or shopping to earn her medal. She never felt the need to conform to those standards to prove her existence,” the salon said in the post.
And he adds: “She is a star, an all-time favourite. No sportswoman, as beautiful as a woman, as radiant as an amazon of auras, had aroused as much controversy as she. Imane did not seek to change her appearance to fit into the moulds in which the world wants to trap us. Her message is much deeper, clothing does not make the monk and appearance does not reveal the essence of a person.”
Beauty Code also insists that “in the ring she doesn’t need any decorations or high heels”, but rather “strategy and strength”.
The beauty salon then turns its attention to Italian boxer Angela Carini, who quit her fight against Khelif after 46 seconds. “The Italian has shown us that even those who cry in schoolyards, those who make up lies to steal other people’s food, can be found in the ring,” she says.
“Iman is beautiful,” the post concludes.
Khelif sparked a wave of opinions for and against during her time at the Olympic Games, while Algeria is a national heroine. Suddenly, the discussion turned to the type of chromosomes and whether or not they are allowed to box. A debate in which politicians and celebrities from different fields weighed in. Finally, the boxer won the up to 66 kilo category by beating the Chinese Yan Lui by unanimous decision.
