Barry can also be heard saying that he assumes her brother has never read her views on immigration cases.

“What have you read?” Mary Trump asks her aunt.

Barry replies: “Not. He doesn’t read ”.

The Washington Post was the first to report on the recordings. The Associated Press later obtained them.

These came to light just a day after the late Robert Trump, brother of Maryanne and the president, was commemorated in a ceremony at the White House. Then the president minimized the recordings.

“Every day something else comes out, who cares. I miss my brother, and I will continue to work hard for the American people. “Trump said in a statement. “Not everyone agrees, but the results are obvious. Soon our country will be stronger than ever ”.

In the weeks since the publication of Mary Trump’s revealing book about her uncle, she has been asked about the sources of some of her information. Nowhere in the volume does she mention that she recorded conversations with her aunt. On Saturday, Mary Trump revealed that she had secretly recorded 15 hours of in-person talks with Barry.

“Mary realized that members of her family had lied in previous testimonies”, said Chris Bastardi, a spokesman for Mary Trump. And she added: “In anticipation of a litigation, she considered it prudent to record conversations to protect herself.”

The president has often spoken highly of his sister; the recordings represent the first time that a family member, outside of Mary Trump, has criticized him.
