Currently, Norwegian ski star Ida Marie Hagen is getting ready for the upcoming season in Nordic combined. Something she is grateful to be able to do, after the previous season came to a dramatic end.
It all started when the 23-year-old, who is fond of sledding, had a desire to use the opportunity before last season’s WC to do something completely different than practice for the championship.
– I got some friends to go sledding. Jarl (Magnus Riiber) questioned the decision, wondering if it was really a good idea. He said that ambulances drive in and out of the toboggan run every day and that I shouldn’t do it before the WC, she says to Dagbladet.
Ida Marie Hagen replied that tobogganing is nothing dangerous, just fun.
That day actually went well. But the tobogganing together with the friends after the championship did not. It ended in blood.
“Shit, now I’m dying”
Ida Marie Hagen and her friends would compete in who came down the hill the fastest.
– I was superior in the first round, but ended up a bit behind in the second. So I took a sharp turn to catch up with them, but it was too sharp. So I went into a low wooden fence that I didn’t see, because it was hidden under the snow.
Hagen further explains that her calf got caught in the fence.
– It was at the front of the calf. It took me a few minutes to get up because it hurt so much. I didn’t know which way to turn.
Despite the pain, Hagen believed that everything would just result in a big bruise. But when she finally made it down to her friends, who were waiting at the bottom of the hill, they wanted to take a look at the leg.
The sight that met them made them sick.
– I pulled up my pants, and saw that there were holes in my tights, and after that I looked at the leg itself. Then it got dark for me. Then I thought: shit, now I’m dying, and had to sit down.
“Felt very sick”
A few seconds later she passed out.
– Then I saw the whole sequence of events in front of me. At the end I thought that everything will be alright, because it’s just a dream. But just then I woke up and saw everyone standing over me. Then I realized it was all true.
Before she passed out, she was afraid that she would not make it to the hospital in time and thus bleed to death.
– But luckily it didn’t bleed that much. But I felt very sick, probably because I was in shock.
The wound required around ten stitches and Hagen is relieved that it didn’t get any worse than it did. Now after the summer, she feels both physically and mentally recovered and thus ready for the coming ski season.
