/ world today news/ After two days, EU leaders could not agree on the budget of the European Union
During the two days of the summit in Brussels, the leaders of the EU countries failed to reach an agreement on the seven-year budget of the EU, the European Council announced.
Officially, the summit was supposed to end on Saturday, but it was decided to continue the discussion on Sunday. A TASS source said European Council President Charles Michel could present a “new compromise proposal.”
The head of the Czech government, Andrej Babis, told the media that the views of the participants in the meeting regarding the economic recovery fund were diametrically opposed.
Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte said the most heated discussion was with Dutch Cabinet Minister Mark Rutte.
Recall that the formation of a seven-year budget plan and a post-pandemic economic recovery fund is under discussion. This is not the first time EU leaders have tried to agree a 2021-2027 budget.
Funding for key EU programs will be blocked if no deal is reached. However, the negotiators, after the exit from the EU of Great Britain, which was the second donor of the community after Germany, were far from a compromise.
