Former OpenAI employees have sent a letter to Musk describing the strange practices of veteran CEO Sam Altman. OpenAI itself operates on a non-profit basis. According to them, Altman tried to transform the company into a commercial form in open and secret ways. The CEO was supposed to take secret steps and initiate secret projects that would lead to his “mercantilistic” visions. He continued to hide unsuccessful projects or reported their results with a delay.
Employees who discovered, pointed out, or disagreed with these activities were systematically fired, which the letter’s authors demonstrate by firing 50% of employees between January 2018 and July 2020. Altman was supposed to ensure that only loyal people would remain in the company, which will not hinder his activities.
“OpenAI’s governance structure, specifically designed by Sam and Greg, intentionally insulates employees from overseeing profitable operations precisely because of their inherent conflict of interest. This opaque structure allows Sam and Greg to operate with impunity without risking their own liability.” — from a letter from ex-OpenAI employees to Elon Musk |
Systematic silencing and intimidation was intended to create an atmosphere suppressing discussion on the ethical side of corporate activities. Atlman’s ordered spying on senior staff was supposed to be the highlight. One of them should have been Ilya Sutskever, who at first joined the board, but subsequently reconsidered his opinion.
These allegations cast a rather different light on the whole situation. It is safe to say, at least, that the change of the board of directors and the return of Altman to the position of CEO will not be the last part of the soap opera.
