I’m a coffee drinker, at least one cup a day, but there are days when I get to three (this is the limit I’ve set for myself and I never exceed it).
I started with my mother’s coffee pot, I think since I’ve known my mother she drinks the same coffee – Doncafe Selected ground (green bag). Later, when I moved to my own house, I switched to an espresso machine with capsules from Tassimo. Limited by budget, I thought I was hitting the jackpot when I got the device + 12 boxes of capsules for 200 or so lei, I don’t remember exactly.
As long as those capsules were, I was really satisfied, but then I realized how expensive such a device is. The operating principle is the same as Gillette razors, the manufacturer does not make money from the device itself, but from reserves (capsules in the case of coffee).
So why don’t I like capsule coffee?
it seems to me the most expensive alternative on the market – you are attracted by various promotions to buy the machine, but the capsules are very expensive (if you want specialties such as Cappuccino or Latte Macchiato, you end up paying somewhere around 3-4 lei/cup of coffee);
a lot, a lot of plastic wasted nonsense (you have the plastic bag, the plastic coffee capsules, the plastic milk capsules, etc.) – that is, we pollute enormously for a few mouthfuls of coffee;
the lack of diversity in terms of the type of coffee – most manufacturers have made their machines compatible only with their capsules, so you are limited only to that manufacturer’s coffee (in my case it was Jacobs).
Some time ago I bought a Philips automatic espresso machine that works with coffee beans, and life for a coffee drinker is much cheaper and simpler. Well, not really cheap if you respect the maintenance recommended by the manufacturer, which I in turn recommend to be respected, but not with the manufacturer’s products (I’m sorry, at Philips they are very expensive and not at all effective, especially when it comes to descaling).
I’m not passionate or enthusiastic, I just like to drink coffee that suits my taste (I don’t pretend to know too much), and from my experience, capsule coffee is the most expensive option possible.
