Barely a week in office, Jürg Altwegg made headlines across the country in July 2017. The school principal banned stuffed foxes, eagles and the like from schools. An investigation had shown that the preparations were contaminated with toxic arsenic. Today he can say it, says Altwegg, who will resign from the city council at the end of the month: “It was a stupid accident with this media release. There shouldn’t have been any talk of disposal.” Today, about half of the schools still have taxidermied animals in display cases. Apparently, only the damaged preparations got away – and the surplus ones: “For example, if you have the 25th sparrow on a branch and only 15 schools want one.”
