The double – bursting with laughter and bursting with action

Between the years 1981-1986, “The Fall Guy”, a series starring Lee Majors (Steve Austin, the man worth millions) was broadcast in the United States about a stunt double who is also a bounty hunter who uses his skills as a stuntman to capture criminals.

This is a detail I did not know before I went to see the movie “The Double”, which is supposed to be based on the same series. This is a detail that in retrospect only enriched my viewing of “The Double” but did not detract from it during the viewing time – because The Double is simply a fun movie in itself, even without prior knowledge.

The double – the plot

Colt Sievers (Ryan Gosling“Barbie”) is a stunt double who stopped his work due to a serious injury and was called back to Flag for the filming of the new movie “Metalstorm”, a DB blockbuster starring Tom Ryder (Aaron Taylor-Johnson“The Bullet Train”), the same actor that Sievers was his double for years.

The production of “Metalstorm” has two problems – the first, the film is directed by Judy Moreno (Emily Blunt“a quiet place”) – his longtime lover whom he left after the injury that ended his career.

And the second – the star of the movie Tom Ryder disappeared from the face of the earth and there are rumors that he had a conflict with criminals. Now Colt has to be the person to save both Tom Ryder and the movie.

Much respect for the profession

We live in a world where action movies are already movies from which we can expect spectacular visual effects created mainly with the help of computer animation, but it used to not be like that. There used to be entire teams of stuntmen and professionals who risked their lives to bring the audience entertainment with quality effects.

“The Double” is a love letter to that time and those people who were the real action stars of the movies we love so much, but never got the recognition they deserved.

This is not surprising, as the film’s director David Leitch was for years Brad Pitt’s stunt double, so he knows the trade intimately.

One of the most important things in a movie like “The Double”, if not the most important of them, is the action, well, not only did the double meet my expectations, it exceeded them by several counts after I found out that the stunts in the film were done in a practical way and not with the help of computer animation, not something I thought about during the movie because the effects And the stunts in the movie look amazing.

The use of practical stunts gives the film an authenticity and soul that is somewhat lacking in today’s action films. It celebrates the world of stunts and pyrotechnic effects, which is often forgotten in the age of CGI, and this film shows that it still has a place and respect in modern cinema.

The best of both worlds

There are many action movies that have great action in them, but not too much plot, and there are movies that have a plot in them but they probably won’t be action movies, and there is the double, which has both.

True, the plot of “The Double” is not really its strong point, but I have already seen action films with a much worse plot that were successful (ahem “The Beehive” ahem).

The plot of “The Double” was intriguing enough to keep me in the chair while I waited to see what would happen next in the movie, and yes, it has quite a few nice twists and surprises that are worth staying for.

What makes the film even more successful is the fact that it is an action film that is also a romantic comedy, which adds another layer of depth to the story, mainly because even in the parts of the romantic comedy the “double” has a great victory.

The aspect of the romantic comedy provides some of the funniest moments in the film, which in advance makes you laugh, and it is also the part where the chemistry between the characters erupts and magnetizes the viewer to the screen.

The plot of “The Double” presents fascinating contrasts between the dangerous and spectacular world of stunts and the personal and emotional drama of the characters.

Ryan Gosling brings with him an emotional depth and complexity, beyond the spectacular stunts he performs and the same magnetic energy that almost brought him an Oscar in “Barbie”, in general sometimes it feels as if Colt Siebros is simply the real life version of Ken – just a person with a very specific skill who is looking for his way in the world

Emily Blunt, who plays Judy Moreno, presents a character so charged and authentic that you can really feel her shared history and emotional tension with Gosling’s character, and throughout the film you just wait to see when she will break out.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, in the role of Tom Ryder, brings the energy and charisma needed for an action movie star in an almost parodic way. His mysterious absence is a central axis in the plot and gives Colt Sievers another motive to deal with the past and the challenges ahead.

Here too, as in “The Bullet Train” before him, Taylor-Johnson proves that he can do both good action and good, self-aware comedy, which in my opinion prepares him in a good way for the role of James Bond, a role that according to the latest rumors is suitable for writing lines Elo is the leading candidate for it.

The bottom line – what did we think of the “double”?

With the current weather, you can be mistaken and think that the double is a summer movie that was mistakenly a few months early, but how well it was early. In any case, in the summer he will have a tough competition with Deadpool and Wolverine, but if there wasn’t – “The Double” would probably be the biggest blockbuster of the summer.

Public service: there is a small scene at the end of the subtitles, during which there are all kinds of segments about how they did the stunts in the film, either way – it’s worth staying a little longer!
